A Day Rafting on the Nantahala

Apr 01, 2015

Asheville is mainly known for its tree-covered mountains and eclectic music scene, but it’s also one of the best destinations for rafting in the US. If you’re planning a visit to Ashville this year, definitely plan a day trip to one of many rafting sites available in the area. One of the best day trips for all levels of experience is Nantahala River Rafting with Carolina Outfitters.

Nantahala is one of the busiest and most known rafting destinations by locals and tourists alike. The river is controlled by a dam that provides a good dependable water supply for rafting seven days a week, and features fun and exciting class II and III whitewater rapids.   Carolina Outfitters offers guide-in-your boat rafting trips with certified guides available with reservations.  The Nantahala is family friendly and self-guided tours are also available for guests who are experienced rafters on the Nantahala.

The river stretches eight and on half miles, and flows from the Beechertown Power Plant to the NantahalaRiver take out site, located just prior to FontanaLake.  It has almost continuous class II and III whitewater rapids that will keep your trip fun down the entire river.  The rafting trip takes about 2 hours on the water.  Guests need to allow about three and a half to four hours total trip time that includes an orientation, a safety procedures presentation, and transportation that is provided to and from the river from our NantahalaRiver whitewater rafting outpost building.  Enjoy the scenic splendor and close up views of the fauna and flora of the NantahalaNational Forest.  Definitely plan to get wet on this exciting outdoor adventure.

The rafting take out for Carolina Outfitters on the Nantahala is at the beautiful rock wall at the riverside beach just below the NantahalaOutdoorCenter.  You can walk up our convenient riverside ramp to get on our buses and vans for your return trip to the CarolinaOutfittersOutpostBuilding.  Guests can take in the scenic beauty of the natural environment, and observe the rafting coming down the river as you enjoy your ride back to our outpost through the scenic Nantahala River Gorge.   There are restrooms and changing rooms at the outpost where you can change back into your dry clothes after the trip.

You will be hungry after your river rafting trip.  There are snacks and drinks available at the Carolina Outpost.  There are plenty of restaurants in the area serving burgers or BBQ, pizza, fresh fish and more.  NantahalaOutdoorCenter and Kelly’s On The River are two popular restaurant destinations serving food to hungry rafters after their trip on the Nantahala.

With more daylight to burn on your trip to Nantahala, we offer a wide range of other activities to make it a full day affair. Rafters may also enjoy a Nantahala Zip Line Canopy Tour that includes 13 zip lines and 8 sky bridges.  This tour takes about three and a half hours, and offers incredible close up views of the NantahalaNational Forest and long range distant views of the Great Smoky MountainsNational Park.   Ask Carolina Outfitters to reserve this treetop zip line canopy tour that you won’t soon forget.

Visitors can also grab a mountain bike and take on the challenging terrain of the NantahalaForest.  The famous Tsali Mountain Bike trails are located on US Forest Service land in the NantahalaNational Forest and they are considered to be one of the premiere mountain bike trail systems in the USA.  The Bike Shop has expert riders and everything you need to take on the trails. The Flint Ridge Trail is specifically tailored for mountain bike riders and features technical riding as well as some rolling single track. Whether you bring your bike or rent one, this is a great compliment to a day of rafting at NantahalaRiver.

Paddle and Saddle combination trips are available with horseback riding on scenic trails in the NantahalaNational Forest.  The two hour horseback riding trip is a very popular one to reserve in addition to NantahalaRiver rafting.  All of the horseback riding trips are led by an experienced guide.

Paddle and Pan combination trips are available with a fun and exciting gemstone mining adventure at Nantahala River Gem Mine.  Guests are finding a treasure trove of beautiful cut stone grade gemstones that include rubies, emeralds and sapphires.  Miners can place orders based on their finds for finished cut stones that will be mailed to their home in a about two weeks.   Gem mining is a fun way to take home a beautiful gemstone as a very special souvenir of your vacation.

Reserve the ‘Two Rivers in Two Days’ package and raft the first day on the NantahalaRiver and the second day on the famous OcoeeRiver.  Located just an hours drive from the Nantahala, the Ocoee is a world famous whitewater rafting river with popular class three and four whitewater rapids.  Carolina Outfitters can reserve both rivers for you.
